Nobody Don't Love Nobody: Lessons on Love from the School With No Name
Published in Hardcover by Gold Leaf Pr (September, 1994)
Author: Stacey Bess
Average review score:

understanding children
This book is about connecting with children and adults no matter their situation. It is about compassion and being non-judgemental. It is about seeing what is extraordinary in every child even when they are trying hard to hide from the world. Stacey Bess is intuitive, honest, straight-forward and compassionate. She connects with children not because she is perfect but because she realizes that she is human just like her students. If you want to find stories that will move you and inspire you, then this book is a path to that place.

Very touching
This is a book about a middle-class teacher who takes a job teaching homeless kids in Salt Lake City. She talks about the kids individually, the problems they had to face being homeless and the joys when she made a breakthrough. It was a lesson on hope and defiance of the odds. I found it especially touching when Karl Malone, a basketball player for the Utah Jazz, took the homeless students Christmas shopping and took them to a Jazz game. I found this to be a wonderful portrayal of the joys and trials of teaching homeless kids.

POWERFUL, INSIGHTFUL and DEEPLY TOUCHING
A beautifully written and honest collection of deeply touching stories that allows the reader a rare opportunity to see life through the tender, young eyes of a child living in a family homeless shelter, as told by their loving dedicated teacher. When the author was first asked to work in the 'School With No Name,' she had no specialized training or curriculum in working with this specialized population of students. But this pioneer let her heart be her guide as she created one of the best pilot programs in alternative education. Her stories will make you laugh, make you cry and will even make you angry. But most of all, it will challenge and inspire you to get involved and find your own special way of making a difference.

Sealife: A Complete Guide to the Marine Environment
Published in Hardcover by Smithsonian Institution Press (September, 1996)
Authors: Geoffrey Waller, Marc Dando, Richard Hull, and Michael Burchett
Average review score:

Wonderful!
This is an absolute must have if you are looking for a quick explanation of all aspects of ocean life. The authors have done a thorough job of making short, detailed explanations to almost anything you might be looking for. This book is basically a fun to read encyclopedia of marine life.

Good Introductory Text
While not intended primarily as a textbook, I have used SeaLife as the text in my introductory oceanography class for the past two years. The authors present their ideas clearly and the illustrations are well done. An adequate index is furnished.

Best guide for the marine environment!
although not a "complete" guide, a wonderful book for every sea-loving creature! wonderful pictures and informative text for every amateure or pregraduate student

Tomorrow's HR Management : 48 Thought Leaders Call for Change
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (June, 1997)
Authors: Dave Ulrich, Michael R. Losey, and Gerry Lake
Average review score:

Excellent Overview
This book presents a wondeful overview of the topics affecting HR. I admit I was a little wary, because this is supposed to be about "tomorrow's" HR trends, and I bought it four years after publication. Despite that, it seems fresh, some of the forecasted trends have already come to pass, and this book is as impressive and essential as when it was first published. Maybe more so. Kudos all the way 'round.

Leer este libro o morir... Read it or die....
Cualquiera que trabaje en Recursos Humanos DEBE de leer este libro. This books is about what HR should be in any organization where HR has any kind of value added. No se lo pierdan esta realmente "abre ojos", despierta al mas dormido de la funcion de Recursos Humanos. Even better than HR Champions.

What Is the Future Role of HR?
"This book offers one approach to thinking about the future of HR. A number of other approaches can and have been used. Futurist methodologies have been applied to study the 'state of the art' and the future and have through surveys of thought leaders identified likely priorities for the future. Our approach", D.Ulrich, M.R.Losey, and G.Lake write, "to thinking about the future of HR parallels closely and draws heavily on a methodology used by F.Hesselbein, M.Goldsmith, and R.Beckhard (Leader of the Future, Organization of the Future)...We have tried to select thought leaders in three groups : academics who study and write HR issues, consultants who offer advice and councel on an array of HR issues, and HR professionals who practice the craft of HR in leading companies...Each of the contributors to this book was asked to write an original ten-page essay on 'the future of HR' as he or she chose to define it...Our hope in this book was for a unique variety of opinion : positive, negative; broad, narrow; optimistic, pessimistic; provocative, discreet; calls for change, calls for status quo (from the Introduction pp.2-3)."

In this context, Ulrich, Losey, and Lake organize the 37 essays into six general sections. Each of these sections deals with a series of questions such as :

Section I :

* What is the strategy of HR?

* What are the products and services of HR?

* How should HR be organized to ensure that the strategy is executed?

Section II :

* What are the future deliverables from HR work?

* What are the metaphors of the HR professional of the future?

* What are the actions for future HR professionals?

Section III :

* What is the history of HR?

* What of the past should be left in the past, and what should be adapted for the future?

* What set of conditions will create a new future?

Section IV :

* Where should HR work be done?

* How do we measure HR work?

* How do HR executives align HR work both inside and outside?

Section V :

* How is intellectual capital operationalized?

* How can HR practices be created that motivate and commit employees?

* What is the impact of humane treatment of employees?

Section VI :

* What are the HR implications of a more global business?

* How can HR practices help a business develop a more global outlook?

* What are the competencies of global leaders?

"If our purpose is to propose a debate about the future", D.Ulrich writes, "it is better to end with questions than with answers. Questions elicit new frameworks, approaches, and alternatives, so, the final two questions we would ask (with our answer) are :

* Do you want to play in this always changing and at times unclear future?

* Are you having fun?

Without a doubt, all the authors in this volume and many others of the best HR professionals we know answer with a resounding 'yes' (p.360)."

I highly recommend.

A Drowning in Swanson Lake
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (April, 2003)
Author: Scott Gertner
Average review score:

A poetic surprise
This book captures small towm America in the 50s and is almost poetic in its descriptions of people and places. The suspense kept me turning pages even though this is not a mystery. You will love some of the people and squirm when faced with others.
The end still has me thinking about what could have been if only a few decisions would have been made differently.

Wonderful!
A sensitive portrait of a more innocent time in America. Gertner creates an array of funny and lovable characters, seen through the eyes of young Hal Moffat. Heart-wrenching dialogue. Elegant prose. A deeply moving work of fiction.

A Drowning In Swanson Lake
A Drowning In Swanson Lake is a nostalgic, but often painful, look back at a child's growing up in upstate New York during the 1950's and 60's. Through the narrator's insightful and often humorous descriptions, and the book's quirky characters, the reader is totaly drawn into the story. What is particularly interesting to me is that the novel is more about self-discovery and self-realization than about any particular dramatic event. That is not to say that there are no dramatic events, but the real story is about the choices that the main character, Hal, makes and the consequences that follow.

The Extraterrestrial Vision: Channeled Material from Theodore
Published in Paperback by Medicine Bear Publishing (December, 1994)
Authors: Theodore, Gina Lake, and Sara Benjamin-Rhodes
Average review score:

Excellent Explanation!
This book is an excellent explanation for any who are searching for answers to the origin of mankind and how we came to be on earth. It answers the question of the missing link through ET's altering of primate genes to produce a being with a soul. They then waited many thousands of years in order to mate with the 'human' species to bring a more evolved being onto the planet.

A truly great book for anyone beginning to search for meanings...

Spiritually based channeled ET information
I have problems with many books which are channelled and also many books purporting to describe the ET agenda. So many seem airy-fairy or unconvincing in some way or other, as if either the author or source is confused.

This book stands out as an exception. While it goes into great detail on which ET civilisations seeded our planet (not of great interest to me, whether accurate or not ) it also provides insight into who is around now, and what they're up to.

It turns out that, not only are there positives and negatives around the planet, (positives the Pleiadeans, negatives the Zeta Reticulian Greys, for example ), but there is another categorisation - whether they come from "third density" worlds like Earth, or higher "fourth" & "fifth density" worlds.

What is most interesting is the description of beings incarnating on Earth who are highly advanced intellectually, but not spiritually. Saddam Hussein is named as one such, and the "good" allows such negatives to persist in order to test us, and further our own growth.

In a similar way there are evidently "fifth density negatives" - highly spiritually evolved, but negative ( a contradiction? ) who are also a great test for the peoples of Earth. Rev Moon & Jim Jones (Jonestown massacre ) are cited here, and I can see Osama bin Laden as the prominent example of a highly spiritual being who nevertheless serves evil, and is a great challenge for the good in the world.

The book actually warns us to use our God-given discrimination when listening to channels, as the bad guys are also channeling. One hallmark of a negative source is their attempt to instil defeatism on Earth - with the notion that we are doomed, either by climatic disasters, or ET colonisation. We are warned against such sources.

Although channelled info is prone to eror ( The inspiring "Starseed Transmissions" predicted the expansion of the Universe as halting & reversing around now - in fact, it's recently been shown to be speeding up! ) this, like Starseed, is definitely a must have for anyone interested in making sense of the ET phenomenon. Full of spiritual wisdom. Buy it while it's still in print.

(...)

The best book on physical extra-terrestrials.
If you read only one book on physical extra-terrestrials, this is the book to read. Both the positive and negative visitors are covered. In addition to providing comprehensive information not available from other sources, an overview perspective is included which will be most valuable as events unfold.

A Farm Under a Lake
Published in Hardcover by Graywolf Press (August, 1989)
Author: Martha Bergland
Average review score:

One of the loveliest books out there
It's alomost impossible to put this book down, so you'll want to have at least a few hours before you get started. Bergland slowly draws you into her setting and characters, until you are one of them, feeling their emotions, lured into their world. The story itself is wonderful, but her telling of it is incredible, delightful and poetic.

A book you can't put down!
A Farm Under a Lake is one of the most incredible books I have ever read. Ms. Bergland's writing brings the reader into the novel immediately and never lets you go.

A marvelous book - not to be missed!
This is simply one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. Her writing is breathtaking. The dignity and tragedy of her characters is rendered so lovingly and with such grace. It is a quiet book, but one which resonates with you long after you've finished reading it. I cannot recommend it highly enough!

The Ponder's Bible
Published in Paperback by Carolelle Publishing (01 February, 2000)
Authors: Gosta H. Lovgren and Gösta H. Lovgren
Average review score:

Down home and folksy
Widely praised as 'easy to read' and common sense. Yes, it does appeal to 'horse sense' thinking, but it doesn't really get into the whys. I think some of the advice was not that good - especially the 'just throw a handful of food in there' one (disaster in a very small pond...even in mine with very good filtration). Otherwise I liked reading it and it was humorous and cute. I suggest finding the color one tho - the black and white one is pretty nasty - the pictures are murky and I would have liked to have seen the examples!

Wisdom begins in wonder
Considering how much time I spend thinking about nothing I thought this would be an interesting read, which it was.
Yet, I'm still left to ponder what this book has to do with pondering. It's ponderous to say the least.

Down to earth Ponding 101
I had already started a small ABS plastic pond before I bought the book. The author has a much larger pond and explains everything about it. He covers it from A to Z.
I am a do it yourselfer and really enjoyed his explanations and innovative ideas.
Eventhough the construction part did not apply to my situation there is plently of other things that do apply.
The author makes no secret that he is giving you his opinion on how to do things and what he likes and doesn't like. For example, he does not like UV clarifiers and prefers to balance the ecosytem to take care of the water borne algae. He states that if the clarifier kills the algae, what elese does it kill but admits that it can kill parasites, etc. that can harm your fish.
Interesting stories of things he had done and mistakes he had made. Not techinical at all but yet it covers about everything.

Tahoe Deathfall
Published in Paperback by Thriller Press (01 August, 2001)
Author: Todd Borg
Average review score:

A tremendous read from a great writer
Todd Borg is a Minnesota native who followed the lure of lakes in the mountains to live in Lake Tahoe. He has created the art-loving detective, Owen McKenna, in his action-packed series beginning with Tahoe Death FALL, which was published in 2001. He quickly followed his maiden book with Tahoe Blowup. Thriller Press launched its business with Todd's Tahoe Death Fall, which was an astute decision.

Fourteen-year-old Jennifer Salazar, a wealthy young heiress, shows up at Owen McKenna's office to hire him as a private investigator because she feels the death of her twin sister nine years before is no accident. She has the I.Q. of a genius, is set to inherit almost four hundred million dollars, and is rightly convinced someone is out to kill her. McKenna, his Harlequin Dane named Spot, and his girlfriend, an exotic beauty who is an entomologist named Street, believe Jennifer. Her claim is verified everywhere they turn as dead bodies from the past and present speak of a family full of evil secrets and unsuspecting victims:

"'That's what they say,' Immanuel said.
'What do you mean?'
'Just what I said. That's what they say.'
'You don't believe it?'
'Put it this way,' the old man said wearily. He leaned his head back and rested it
against the pillow. 'There is something wrong with the woman. She is disturbed.
No doubt about it. But a paranoid schizophrenic needing to be locked up? I doubt it.'"

Todd Borg writes a rip-roaring, suspense-driven mystery that keeps the reader glued to his book until the final breathtaking denouement. His characters are superbly crafted, especially his dog Spot, who looms over the action like a benevolent giant, finally risking his life when necessary. Borg knows how to spin a yarn, and he is adept at utilizing every nook and cranny of the Lake Tahoe area as his backdrop. Tahoe Death Fall is an outstanding effort from a true up-and-comer in the mystery business. Borg is able to send shivers up our spine and make us think twice about checking all the doors and windows before we go to bed at night, as well as looking for skeletons in our ancestry. A tremendous read from a great writer.

Awesome!
I picked up this book at a local (to Lake Tahoe) independent bookstore. It is a treat of a book and as a local to Lake Tahoe, I appreciated that all the references were accurate. Owen and Spot, along with girlfriend Street, were dynamite in this book. The book is well written and I was hard pressed not to stay up all night finishing it. I have the second book which I am anxious to start. Well written, well research, and a great story! I urge others to pick it up and give it a read!

The Buckland Romani Tarot: In the Authentic Gypsy Tradition
Published in Cards by Llewellyn Publications (January, 2001)
Authors: Raymond Buckland and Lissanne Lake
Average review score:

Be a Gypsy - or at least use appropriate cards...
I don't own very many Tarot decks - I've never been interested in collecting them. I'm a lot more interested in using a deck that speaks to me - a deck that allows me to be a better reader for others.

I find the vibrant colors and highly evocative imagery of this deck to be one of the more interesting I've ever used. The basic images aren't that different from other decks that you won't know what the cards mean anymore, but they're different enough to allow you to gain a whole new insight on the Tarot by using this deck.

The four cards that are shown in the picture section give you a good idea of what some of the cards from this deck look like. I'm particularly fond of the secondary interpretations that one can divine from these cards. Are those Gypsy children getting a drink from the cups on the stairs of the Six of Cups or are they spiking a cup with a Gypsy love potion? It's up to the reader to decide - based on the cards around you in a reading.

The art is fantastic and reminds me a lot of the supposed Gypsy heritage of Tarot cards, although some people might be put off by that type of imagery. The colors and symbolism give me a great insight when using this deck to give readings to others.

The book is very informative and it's use of the images from the cards enhances it's value to potential users of this deck.

But it's not too overpowering for new Tarot readers either, and that's a big plus. This deck might work well at a carnival or renaissance fair if you want to give it an ideal flavor. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in Tarot reading, especially if you are interested in Tarot readings for other people, and not just self discovery.

Simple, Effiecient and Full of Energy!
After taking a very interesting tarot reading in downtown sau paulo, I was hooked this original method of divination. I started looking around for something that displays the tradition in itself and is also well designed to learn from and for quicker reading. Many books were on the subject, some kits which contain the decks too. However, most were designed in a way that only experienced tarot readers would be interested. I lost my desire after a while. Then, I came across the Buckland Romani Tarot kit. I was impressed by the cover art done by Lissane Lake so I bought it as a last chance pursuit. Three weeks later, I was literally being paid a visit by friends and relatives who were amazed by the degree of accuricy and speed of my previous readings. It took me two days to get the actual hand and with the amazing, thorough guide book that comes with this deck, I quickly became a Gypsy myself! This is an amazing kit, just looking at the deck itself i sense the power within. If you're interested in tarot and you want to be a part of this amazing art, buy this and only this!

Love it!
What a remarkable odyssey! Such things have been revealed to me since I bought this deck. My mother tearfully confessed to me that for 82 years she has kept the secret that she was born of English-Romani ancestry, and so I too must be Rom--like those depicted in these cards. Then I found out that my father's family just might also be Romani. Unbelievable! I'm still in shock. I had no idea but it's no wonder I love this deck and book. They seem to speak to me personally, and I find they work very well for me indeed. I also love the illustrations. They depict a proud people. -- Harry Mason
